What is Earth Day?
There's often much confusion about Earth Day.
From wikipedia: Started nearly 40 years ago in the US, the Earth Day celebrated on 22 Apr is not a UN-sanctioned 'Day' or 'Year'. There are two websites claiming to be the 'official' Earth Day site: http://www.earthday.org/ and http://www.earthday.net/. In addition, there is a UN-sanctioned Equinox Earth Day which is celebrated around March at the annual equinox. This is managed by the Earth Society Foundation.
Nevertheless, a wide range of activities are conducted under the banner of 'Earth Day' in many countries on 22 April.
Here's some to be held in Singapore:
23 Apr (Sat): Celebrate Earth Day @ Singapore Botanic Gardens
Join us in the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden to celebrate Earth Day. Pick up tips on respecting and caring for Mother Earth. Start making a difference for nature and our environment while enjoying a fun-filled day of activities - guided walks, workshops and talks. Activities include:
- Guided Tour: “Sara Goes Carbon Footprinting”
- Guided Tour: “Let’s Discover Plants & Animals”
- ‘Green’ Art&Craft : Exciting Ceramic Tree Fridge Magnet Painting
- ‘Green’ Art&Craft: Cute Recycled Key Hangers
- ‘Green’ Art&Craft: Puppet Making using recyclables
- Drama Workshops: “Stories About The Forest” Series
- Talk: “Wildlife Around Us”
- Competition: My “Mini Dish Garden” Contest
All funds raised will be channelled to the Garden City Fund to support the maintenance of the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. More details on the NParks website. 9am-5pm, Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, Bukit Timah Core of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, $2-$10 per person.
23 Apr (Sat): Earth Day Celebration @ Pasir Ris Park
Come see the Jewel in the East! Learn about the importance of the mangrove to our eco system. Free Mangrove Guided Walks (in English, Chinese and Malay) in the morning for the public and the 5 self-help Community Groups in Singapore. Observe how a Mangrove Clean-up and Trenching activity is conducted and watch the Planting of Trees by Organisations/Schools. 9-10am, Pasir Ris Park, Car Park C, $4 per person.
22 Apr (Fri): Party for Earth with Ground-Up Initiative
"A Beautiful Connection" aims to reconnect people to the land. The day will kick off with ‘yoga circle’, ‘Walk for Earth’ and ‘Eco-heroes’ followed by artist-led community installation, a series of workshops such as puppets, drums, handicraft-making out of scraps, ‘Upcyling jewellery making’ and many more nature-orientated creative activities. The day’s program also includes theatrical and music performances by local artist, to name a few, Moody Theatre, Juz-B Accapella, Amanda Ling with Thunder Rock School. Admission is free and all are welcome! 9.30am–6pm, Bottle Tree Park, Yishun, at 81 Lorong Chencharu Singapore 769198 (10min walk from Khatib MRT station).
