Biodiversity for kids during the June holidays!

Exciting nature activities for kids are lined up for this June school holidays! Lots of fun ways to learn more about Singapore's biodiversity!

Join a one-day Young Naturalist Passport Camp, learn about plants and animals at the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, and enjoy a wide range of family activities at the HortPark Family Fiesta 2010.

Here's highlights of some of the many nature events for kids during the June holidays.

At Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
12 Jun (Sat) and 26 Jun (Sat): Young Naturalist Passport Camp at Sungei Buloh A one-day camp full of fun-filled and educational indoor and outdoor learning of the wetlands and nature conservation issues through worksheets, nature walks and hands-on activities. The kids will earn a stamp for every completed activity, and a full collection of stamps will earn them a series of cloth badges. Suitable for children 6-10 years old.
At the Jacobs Ballas Children's Garden
12 Jun (Sat): All about edible plants - a tour for kids Learn where healthy, yummy fruits and vegetables come from! Be amazed by the many different types of fruits and vegetables that we have in Jacob Ballas Children's Garden! Give your eyes a visual treat! Join us to learn interesting and amazing fruit and veggie facts. Suitable for children in K1 - P6 levels. $6/child.

10 Jun (Thu) and 26 Jun (Sat): Let’s Discover Plants & Animals - a guided tour for kids at the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden. Apart from plants, we often come across many animals in the Gardens, such as, birds, frogs, squirrels, butterflies, dragonflies, ants, earthworms. Be amazed by the many different types of animals in Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden! Learn fascinating facts about wildlife in the Garden and pick up tips on respecting them in nature and our environment. You may even have the chance to get up-close-and-personal with an oriental whip snake and a monitor lizard too! Suitable for children in K1 - P6 levels. $6/child.
The HortPark Family Fiesta 2010 features many family events including some focused on biodiversity.
19 Jun (Sat): Bats are beautiful! - a night workshop for kids Bats are awesome flying mammals. They are important to us as they help to pollinate plants that in turn produce fruit for us. Insect-eating bats help to control our insect-pest numbers, while fruit-eating bats help to disperse seeds that contribute to our forests. Join us for a bat-watching session to learn all about these awesome flying mammals, and discover how they play an important ecological role in our environment. Suitable for children between 5-11 years old. $20/child.

20 Jun (Sun): Night Workshop: Fabulous Frogs & Terrific Toads! Find out how you can make a positive difference to frogs and toads and their habitats. Learn about the diversity of frogs and toads in Singapore, their life cycle, where they live, what they eat, what may eat them, and the threats they face daily. Suitable for children above 5 years old. $20/child.

19 Jun (Sat) and 20 Jun (Sun): Bugs & Slugs! What's Wild at HortPark? Join this fun walk with us to find out more about our garden friends. Suitable for children above 5 years old. Free.

20 Jun (Sun): Butterfly Garden Tour at HortPark: Get up close and personal with the flying jewels, and learn their different stages of metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar into butterfly. Observe how pupae emerge into adult butterflies before taking their maiden flight within HortPark's Butterfly Garden. Free.
Other exciting events

5 Jun (Sat): HeART for Nature Workshop Kids will delve deep into their hearts to express nature in various themed art activities like drawing, fingerprinting, origami, puppet making. The children will also learn about our natural heritage. Free, for kids 5-10 years (with parental supervision) at Lower Pierce Reservoir Park.

12 Jun (Sat): Getting To Know Our Dipterocarps : Elders Of Our Forest at Yishun Park Come learn about the beautiful and important forest trees at Yishun Park through a nature walk, fun games, animal yoga and story-telling. Learn how trees grow, why they are important, and the plants and animals that call trees home. Make a difference for our planet by planting a plant. $10/participant for kids 5-10 year at Yishun Park.

26 Jun (Sat): Free Chek Jawa boardwalk tour The Naked Hermit Crabs introduce you to Chek Jawa without getting your feet wet. Even though we are not going on to the shore, there is still much to see and enjoy. There are monitor lizards, fiddler crabs, spiders, rare plants, wild boars, mudskippers and lots of fruit trees. If we are lucky, we might even spot the Oriental Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Sea Eagle and the giant Atlas Moth.
