Biodiversity for kids during the June holidays!

Exciting nature activities for kids are lined up for the coming school holidays! Lots of fun ways to discover and enjoy Singapore's biodiversity!
Here's highlights of some of the many exciting nature events for kids during the June holidays.

28 May (Sat): Getting To Know Our Dipterocarps: Elders Of Our Forest with Cicada Tree Eco Place.
Learn about the beautiful and important forest trees at Yishun Park through a nature walk, fun games, animal yoga and story-telling. You will learn how trees grow, why they are important, and the plants and animals that call trees home. For kids 5-10 years. $10 per participant. Pre-registration required.

3 Jun (Fri) and 10 Jun (Fri): Beach Critters Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris Park
SUN, sea and SAND! Sift through soft sand to find small animals that call our beaches home! Learn more about coastal biodiversity at this very hands-on workshop and unleash your creativity to "make" coloured sand bottles. Your creation is yours to keep! For kids 5-10 years. $15 per person. Pre-registration required.

4 Jun (Sat): Birds of the Forest Connecting with Nature Jun 2011
Join us for a chirpy experience at Telok Blangah Hill Park! Comprising lush green open spaces and forested areas, this park is home to numerous species of flora and fauna. Bring along your binoculars and you may spot some of the 43 species of birds that may be found here! For kids 5 years and above. Free. Pre-registration required.

4 Jun (Sat) and 11 Jun (Sat): HeART for Nature
This free art workshop helps children to delve deep into their hearts to express nature in various themed art activities like drawing, fingerprinting, origami, puppet making. The children will also learn about our natural heritage. For kids 5-10 years (with parental supervision). Free. Pre-registration required.

11 Jun (Sat): Loving Bugs & Slugs with Cicada Tree Eco Place.
Look out for bugs and slugs in HortPark! What type of bugs can we find? What types of slugs will there be? What do bugs and slugs eat? Do slugs eat bugs? How are they important to our environment and to other living things? Join this guided nature walk to discover all about bugs and slugs. For kids 5-8 years. $25 per child. Pre-registration required.

11 Jun (Sat): Young Naturalists Passport Camp at Sungei Buloh
A one day camp with fun-filled and educational indoor and outdoor learning of the wetlands and nature conservation issues through worksheets, nature walks and hands-on activities. Children will earn a stamp for every completed activity, and a full collection of stamps will earn them a series of cloth badges. For kids 6-10 years old. Refundable $5 registration fee. Pre-registration required.

11 Jun (Sat): Free Chek Jawa boardwalk tour with the Naked Hermit Crabs
Discover Chek Jawa without getting your feet wet. Even though we are not going on to the shore, there is still much to see and enjoy. There are monitor lizards, fiddler crabs, spiders, rare plants, wild boars, mudskippers and lots of fruit trees. If we are lucky, we might even spot the Oriental Pied Hornbill, White-bellied Sea Eagle and the giant Atlas Moth. Not more than five persons in a group. Free. Pre-registration required.

12 Jun (Sun): M.A.D. for Sea Turtles! Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris Park
Join us for a lesson on the seashore at Pasir Ris Park. You will learn all about the sea turtles that call Singapore home -- where they live, what they eat, and the dangers they face! How we can make a positive difference in their lives? It will be a session of fun, story-telling, art and craft and nature learning! For kids 5-10 years. $20 per person. Pre-registration required.

14 Jun (Tue) and 15 Jun (Wed): Say Hello to Forest Trees! with Cicada Tree Eco Place
Do you know what tree produces the Buah Keluak that your grandmother cooks in her Curry Buah Keluak? What does the Buah Kedondong Tree look like? Join this guided nature walk and greet some lovely forest trees. Find out about the animals and plants that live on and around them. For kids 5-10 years. $10 per child. Pre-registration required.

17 Jun (Fri): Who Lives at the Seaside? Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris Park
Learn about our friends who live at the seaside -- sea stars and sea slugs, barnacles and crabs, sea snails and octopuses. Where can we find them? What do they eat? What may eat them? How can we make a difference in their lives? JOIN us for this lesson on the seashore at Pasir Ris Park. For kids 5-10 years. $20 per child. Pre-registration required.

18 Jun (Sat): Say Hello to Bats and Snakes of the Forest! with Cicada Tree Eco Place.
Besides being nocturnal, are there other ways that bats and snakes may be similar? How are they different? Where are we likely to find them? What types of bats and snakes can we find? Join us for an evening walk at Kent Ridge Park and you will discover these answers and more! For kids 5 years and above. $25 per child. Pre-registration required.

18 Jun (Sat): Kids’ Fun with Hydroponics Farming & Butterflies with Nature Society (Singapore).
We will be visiting Oh Chin Huat Hydroponic Farms at Bah Soon Pah Road near Yishun. This tour will introduce fascinating culture techniques such as Dynamic Root Floating, aeroponics, nutrient film and drip irrigation. The farm also has a Butterfly Lodge where visitors can come face-to-face with live caterpillars, transforming pupas, emerging butterflies and fluttering adults. $7 (Nature Society members), $10 (non-members), payable on the spot. Pre-registration required.

19 Jun (Sun): Seaside Treasure Hunt! Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris
Come find seashore treasures that are ours to protect. This fun treasure hunt is designed for young kids 5-8 years of age. Through hands-on activities, kids will discover more about the unique animals and plants of our seashores. $20 per person. Pre-registration required.

24-25 Jun (Fri-Sat): Raffles Museum Open House - for kids!
In conjunction with Children’s Season 2011, the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research (RMBR) open house highlights the rich biodiversity in Singapore. Although Singapore is but a small island, our species-rich habitats are something that we can be proud of. Come for guided gallery and behind-the-scene tours, work with scientists and experience the life of a curator. Many exciting activities such as clay-modelling, face painting, mask making, photo hunt and button making. Attractive prizes to be won! With a shuttle bus from Buona Vista MRT! Some activities require pre-registration and a minimum donation.

24 Jun (Fri): Excuse Me, Are You a Beach Bug? Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris Park
Curious about insects that call our seaside and coastal parks home? Join us for this engaging lesson on insects by the seashore at Pasir Ris Park. For kids 5-10 years. $20 per person. Pre-registration required.

25 Jun (Sat): Nature Adventure Galore at Labrador
Kidz! Listen to a story, make a craft and discover the fascinating world of nature using our fabulous five senses. Two hour programme full of activities and games. Come and enjoy in this fun-filled session that awaits your creativity. For kids 5-8 years. $10 per person. Pre-registration required.

26 Jun (Sun): Say Hello to Seashore Trees Fun Naturally! @ Pasir Ris Park
What does Coconut Trees, the Sea Almond, the Sea Hibiscus and the Casuarina have in common? They are seashore trees found at Pasir Ris Park. Come join us and learn about trees that grow at the seaside! For kids 5-10 years. $20 per person. Pre-registration required.

26 Jun (Sun): Kent Ridge Park Heritage Tour Connecting with Nature Jun 2011
Kent Ridge Park is one of the few places in Singapore that is rich in both historical and natural heritage. Discover its interesting fauna and flora, and learn all about the fiercest battle fought during World War II. For kids 5 years and above. $7 per person. Pre-registration required.
